2. How does radioactive iodine help cure Graves' disease? Graves' disease (exophthalmic or toxic goiter) can result from a thyroid gland that is overproducing the iodine-containing hromone thyroxine. 3. What condition do you have if you have an enlargement of the thyroid gland? A goiter is an enlarged thyroid which causes a swelling in thefront part of the neck. Simple goiter is caused by the lack of iodine in the diet.
